App Store Optimization (ASO) is the process of using different strategies to optimize, or improve, a mobile application visibility on the app store. These strategies can refer to the overall look, placement, or the copy of each screenshot. I have designed, localized, and resized hundreds of screenshots for companies such as Niantic, Zynga, Supercell, and some lesser known ones based on the type of game and marketing that they were looking for. If requested, I have also crafted different versions to be used for A/B testing since two different designs can be posted simultaneously by having one on the Play Store and the other on the App Store.
There is a lot to consider when designing for ASO as mobile app genre can affect what kind of image and copy would increase rank. For example a note taking or journaling applications should lean into their refined UI and task flow, but a gaming app would want to highlight exciting features and use fun game play imagery to interest the user into downloading.
